Road trip in the Southern Alps: along the Ubaye
A wild valley between passes and villages
The fifth leg of this itinerant journey takes you to the Ubaye Valley, one of the most unspoiled in the Southern Alps. Here, the road follows the meanders of a raging river and crosses a succession of spectacular passes, villages with unexpected influences, and high mountain landscapes.
On the Route des Grandes Alpes, each bend reveals a different setting: alpine panoramas, hamlets with Mexican architecture, dizzying gorges, and even the highest road in Europe. An itinerary that will appeal to heritage lovers as well as those who love wide open spaces and driving.

Must-see stops on the circuit
1. Col de Vars (2,109 m)
First climb of the day: the Col de Vars, an iconic section of the Route des Grandes Alpes. Its sweeping panorama of the surrounding peaks immediately sets the tone for the route.
2. Jausiers
A small, unique village, Jausiers is distinguished by its houses with colorful, Mexican-inspired facades. A legacy of the “émigrés” who returned home after making their fortune across the Atlantic, they give the village a unique identity.
3. Col de la Bonette-Restefond (2,802 m)
The day’s highest point, the Cime de la Bonette is the highest passable road in Europe. At this altitude, the view extends as far as the Mediterranean on a clear day. A legendary passage for any driving enthusiast.
4. Barcelonnette
In the heart of the valley, Barcelonnette is a lively town with a southern feel. Its Mexican-inspired villas and lively atmosphere make it a pleasant stopover for a meal or a stroll.
5. Col de la Cayolle (2,326 m)
A more discreet but equally magnificent pass: the Col de la Cayolle connects Ubaye to the Haut-Verdon. Its winding road meanders between mountain pastures, waterfalls, and breathtaking alpine landscapes.

6. Bachelard Gorges
Spectacular and wild, the Bachelard Gorges are a true geological challenge. The road that crosses them is aerial, suspended above the water, offering a unique driving experience.
7. Serre-Ponçon Animal Park
On the way back down, stop at the Serre-Ponçon Animal Park, the first zoological park specializing in mountain wildlife. An educational family break to discover chamois, ibex, and other local species.
