Road trip in the Southern Alps: legends and mystical apparitions

Between Beliefs and Magnificent Landscapes

The sixth stop on this itinerary, this tour takes you to the great spiritual and legendary sites of the Southern Alps. Here, the landscapes bear the imprint of nature as much as that of popular and religious beliefs. Marian shrines, ancient abbeys, historic passes, and deep valleys make up a day where mysticism blends with the beauty of the mountains.

Each stop tells a story: that of an apparition, a pilgrimage, or a tradition rooted in collective memory. Along the way, a whole intangible heritage is revealed, enriched by the majesty of the surrounding natural sites.

Must-see stops on the tour

1. Boscodon Abbey and Forest

Founded in the 11th century, the Boscodon Abbey is a jewel of Alpine Romanesque art. Nestled in the heart of a larch forest, it exudes an atmosphere of serenity. The legendary and unspoiled Boscodon Forest itself is home to iconic sites such as the Bear Fountain.

2. Notre-Dame du Laus

A site of Marian apparitions in the 17th century, the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Laus is a major pilgrimage site. Every year, it attracts thousands of visitors who come to seek peace and inspiration in this fervent site.

3. Col Bayard

At an altitude of 1,245 m, the Col Bayard is a historic passage between Provence and Dauphiné. It owes its name to the legendary knight Bayard, a symbol of bravery and loyalty, whose memory still looms large in the region.

4. Notre-Dame de la Salette

Perched at an altitude of 1,800 m, the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de la Salette was built on the site of an apparition of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in 1846. A spiritual center, it overlooks the valley and offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains.

5. Valgaudemar Valley

Deep and wild, the Valgaudemar Valley is home to many legendary sites, such as the Devil’s Bridge and the Bridal Veil Waterfall. Here, ancient tales blend with the power of the landscape to create a unique atmosphere.
